42 Best (And 1 WTF) New Android Games From The Last 2 Weeks (6/11/13 - 6/24/13) Part 1

Tiny Token Empires

Today's roundup is presented by Tiny Token Empires from HeroCraft. This game has an interesting mix of genres: the city and empire building is reminiscent of a Civilization-style game set in 2000 B.C. But the way that your empire expands is kind of like Risk... until you get into the actual battles, which play out as a swapping puzzle game. It's an intriguing and humorous combination of strategy and puzzle elements, with HeroCraft's usual spit and polish. There are five individual campaigns in the $4.99 game, with three difficulty settings for new, intermediate, and advanced strategy players.
--
HeroCraft are delighted to announce the launch of the critically acclaimed casual strategy game Tiny Token Empires on Android. Mixing brain-teasers, humor and strategy, Tiny Token Empires puts you in charge of five ancient Empires: Rome, Greece, Egypt, Persia, or Carthage. By developing cities and armies, and annexing new territories, you gradually expand your power! With its cute characters, tough enemies and compelling puzzles, you’ll fall in love with this world - just before you conquer it!
Game features:
  • A world of goofy gods and cute monsters
  • 5 game modes, 5 distinctive campaigns

Might & Magic Clash Of Heroes

Android Police coverage: [New Game] UbiSoft And Tag Games Release Nintendo DS Favorite Might & Magic Clash Of Heroes For Android
The Heroes of Might & Magic franchise has had a few releases on Android before, but this one is the first to jump straight from the Nintendo DS. Clash of Heroes is a combination of traditional RPG elements and a puzzle-style battle system, wherein you arrange your units in color-coordinated formations to unleash combos in turn-based fights. The original was well-received, both on the DS and its subsequent re-releases. At five bucks, it's surprisingly cheap for a console port, and local multiplayer is included.
--
The award-winning Puzzle-RPG is now remastered and optimized for Android devices! Live the epic adventure of 5 young Heroes leading their armies to save the world of Might & Magic. Create offensive or defensive unit formations, master advanced combos and build up the right strategy to beat your enemies. Master, earn and hire more than 10 heroes, 40 units and 50 artifacts to create the ultimate army combination. Gameloft's Gangstar series has moved to Sin City, and expanded both the play area and the main character's abilities in the process. It's your standard Grand Theft Auto clone, but if you're looking for a story-driven crime game with no shortage of over-the-top action, Gangstar Vegas should deliver. Eden to Green

Android Police coverage: Eden To Green Opens Up On The Play Store, Now Available To Tree-Huggers Everywhere
Eden To Green is the latest game published by Zynga, and it is most certainly not a rip-off of Plants vs. Zombies. Well, that's not really fair: this game does switch things to a 3D perspective, and the enemies are Terminator-meets-lawnmower machines. The graphics are surprisingly good (the game seems limited mostly to Tegra hardware at the moment) and the turn-based battles take advantage of the extra dimension. Be prepared for a big social push and lots of IAP.
--
The machines have invaded the beautiful planet of Eden. Eden to Green is an addictive blend of casual-strategy and fast-paced battles with iconic plants versus comic machines. Create an army from a wide variety of plants to fight back against the alien machines and restore the once beautiful vistas. Increase 'Euphoria' by planting and once on the offensive, plant more and better plants to launch an all-out counter-attack. March on until the war against the machines is won.

Infinite Universe

Tin Man Games has a small but dedicated following: old-school tabletop gamers who can't get enough of this developer's unique mix of traditional pen-and-paper RPGs and Choose Your Own Adventure-style storytelling. The latest entry in their RPG collection is Infinite Universe, a sci-fi affair set in a galaxy that's not far away at all at an indeterminate time. The story combines your typical rebels versus empire staging with some identity crisis and a bit of mystery. Infinite Universe is expensive, like all Tin Man games, but worth it for fans.

Hero of Many

Android Police coverage: Hero Of Many Is A Beautiful Side Scrolling Game That Definitely Isn't About Sperm
OK, the playable characters in this game look like a certain human by-product. Go ahead and get the giggles out of your system now. The game itself is more about exploration than fighting, as if the monochromatic, silhouetted environments didn't clue you in. Yes, it's a rather typical indie game (how many of these have you seen in the last two years?) but if you like that sort of thing, have at it.
--
Hero Of Many takes you on an epic journey as a tiny hero in a dangerous world. But you’re not alone; you lead a swarm of water-beings through fierce battles for freedom across four different worlds and twenty-six choreographed levels. It’s an atmospheric action adventure that takes you deep into underwater caverns. Where you:
  • Explore mysterious places
  • Save your friends
  • Learn how to survive
  • Face array of challenges
  • Discover new powers
  • Defeat monsters

Frozen Synapse

Android Police coverage: [New Game] Frozen Synapse Launches In The Play Store For $6.99, Reminds Everyone How Awesome The Humble Bundle Is
The Humble Bundle has been an opening venue for many PC games turned Android showcase, and Frozen Synapse serves as a pricey reminder for how awesome that program is. But the game is certainly worth its steep asking price, at least if you're a fan of turn-based, top-down strategy. The game's unique hook is that you make your selection, then both you and the enemy move at the same time. The PC game has been faithfully adapted to Android with a new touch interface and multiplayer battles. The game is currently in beta.
--

The Silent Age

Android Police coverage: [New Game] The Silent Age Slips Into Google Play, Asks Many Mysterious Questions In Point-And-Click Format
The deluge of awesome point-and-click games for Android continues. In The Silent Age, Joe the Janitor is alone on a dead planet, with nothing but a time machine and your puzzle-solving skills to help him. Visuals are impressive for 2D sprites (dear developer: thank you for not going 8-bit) and the first chapter of the story is free. The rest you'll have to wait for, probably with an in-app purchase or two to follow.
--
It’s 1972. Love is free. Flipflops, English leather and bandanas are the height of fashion. Meanwhile the Cold War is more than lukewarm and a real one is going on overseas. Movements are happening. Environmentalists, the female liberties movement, and on the dance floors an entirely different kind of movement is overtaking the underground clubs. The winds of change are certainly blowing over the country.

Pet Rescue Saga

Android Police coverage: [New App] Mega-Popular Game Pet Rescue Saga Scurries Into The Play Store
What do household pets and Bejeweled-style block puzzles have in common? Not much, but Pet Rescue Saga tries to get some mileage out of the matchup anyway. This super-popular game already has legions of fans on Facebook, based on an adorable art style and not much more. Naturally, it pushes the social element pretty hard, and you'll have to pony up real money or give the game some free advertising to continue when you run out of lives.
--

Stargate SG-1: Unleashed Ep 1

Android Police coverage: [New Game] Stargate SG-1 Unleashed Gates Into The Play Store, With Full Voice Cast From The Show
Stargate fans, unite: this game may just be the last officially-licensed media to ever feature the four core SG-1 cast members in an in-universe performance. Unleashed is a pretty generic action title that plays out as an episode of the sci-fi television show. It's not going to take home any game of the year awards, but if you've got an itch that only Colonel O'Neill can scratch, it's a much better option than that Infinity Blade knockoff from last year. More episodes will be coming as in-app purchases.
--
The Stargate SG-1 interactive adventure has arrived. The original cast of Stargate SG-1 is back, and they are reunited in an entirely new episode that will awaken all your Stargate memories. Starring the voices of Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neill, Amanda Tapping as Samantha Carter, Michael Shanks as Dr. Daniel Jackson and Christopher Judge as Teal’c, this is an all new immersive third-person adventure you can enjoy on your Android. Get involved in the action – defeat Jaffa warriors, infiltrate a Goa’uld labor camp, solve cryptic ancient puzzles - and stop a new evil menace before it’s too late.

Android Police coverage: Verizon's D:COM DROID Augmented Reality Game Leaks Early, APK Available For Download Now [Updated]
Here's Verizon's latest attempt at glitzy DROID branding, this time in the form of an augmented reality game. The battle mechanic itself doesn't feature much AR - tap and swipe to shoot the enemy until he's dead. But there's an Ingress-style location-based element to help you find items or credits, and players can take photos of their customized mechs on real-world backgrounds. Duke it out with local players to become king of the hill... and hope they haven't spent more on in-app purchases than you have.

Redline Rush

Android Police coverage: [New Game] Crescent Moon Games Pulls Redline Rush Into Google Play, Parks It In The Free Lot
Mix a traditional racing game with an endless runner, and you'd get something like Crescent Moon's Redline Rush. The game is a bit on the simple side with just two buttons for controls, so it probably won't satisfy hardcore racing fans. But easy gameplay and great graphics, endless runner junkies will feel right at home. Run from the cops for as long as you can, and collect coins to improve your ride... or just go the easy way and pay some real-world cash for a new car.

Despicable Me

Android Police coverage: [New Game] Despicable Me: Minion Rush Dashes Into The Play Store With Cinematic Charm Intact
Licensed movie games come in roughly two forms on mobile: endless runners and beat-em-ups. Despicable Me chooses the former, because it's a kid's movie... but I wouldn't mind seeing a Smash Bros-style fighting game starring the Minions. Anyway, the official movie-game includes the iconic yellow critters running away from various bad guys. You can dress up a minion for a more personal touch, or go Godzilla on Gru's lab.
--
Gru’s loyal, yellow, gibberish-speaking Minions are ready for their toughest challenge in Despicable Me: Minion Rush. Play as a Minion and compete with others in hilarious, fast-paced challenges in order to impress your boss, (former?) super-villain Gru. Jump, fly, dodge obstacles, collect bananas, be mischievous, and defeat villains to earn the title of Minion of the Year.

Monsters University

Android Police coverage: [New Game] Disney's Monsters University For Android Is Now In Session In The Play Store
The marketing assault for Monsters University has just begun, and no kid's movie is complete without an official licensed game. This one uses the standard endless runner format to showcase Mike and Sully, chasing after a rival school's mascot for some post-curfew fun. The main game is a buck, but you can try out the core game in the free Catch Arnie title.
--
Let the scary out in 2 exciting games based on the Disney•Pixar film “Monsters University,” and prove you’re the ultimate scarer. Prep for more Scare Games to come in future updates.
Catch Archie:
• Get a hold of Archie the Scare Pig, the squealing mascot of Monsters University’s rival school, Fear Tech, in this thrilling game.
• Chase Archie in 30 exciting stages, and tire him out to win each stage.
• Swipe to jump, slide, and dodge tricky obstacles throughout campus.
Toxicity Challenge:
• Compete in the first scare game event of the year, and put your agility skills to the test.
• Race against the clock, and run through the sewers before time runs out.
• Watch out for the stinging glow urchins that will sting and slow you down throughout all 30 stages.

Little Nick: The Great Escape

Remember what I said about licensed games falling into one of two categories? Here's yet another example. Little Nick is apparently a kid's show originating from France, and (this is important) has nothing to do with a certain terrible Adam Sandler movie. The game lets you play as one of the pint-sized gang as they endlessly run away from adults, with the usual assortment of obstacles and power-ups. BulkyPix has a decent reputation, so maybe it's good enough for the show.
--
The official adaptation of the Little Nicholas animated series is finally coming to Google Play devices. Little Nicholas has been up to mischief again. Help him flee on his bike before Old Spuds catches him. Travel through the city's different neighborhoods (the residential area, the city center and the wasteland) and join Little Nicholas and all his friends on this madcap chase. Saddle up for a crazy race..

Man of Steel

Android Police coverage: [New Game] Man Of Steel Flies Into The Play Store, May Or May Not Be Invincible
...and here's the beat-em-up side of the equation. Man Of Steel turned out to be pretty polarizing in the theaters, but the $5 game is getting negative reviews in the Play Store, currently sitting at a 2.4-star average. The game is yet another Infinity Blade-style fighter, driven by taps and swipes. Supes fans can revel in a few unlockable costumes, but the rest of the game is rather bland, even with some better-than-average graphics.
--
**THE OFFICIAL GAME OF THE MAN OF STEEL MOVIE.*** NOTE: Man of Steel is optimized for top Android devices including the Google Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy S4. Additional support will be added in future updates. General Zod is threatening Earth and only the Man of Steel can stop him. Utilize the powers of Superman to fight your way to victory and save the planet from certain destruction.

Batman: Arkham City Lockdown

See that listing up there for Superman? That, with Batman instead. Arkham City Lockdown is now on Google Play after a short stint of Amazon exclusivity. Too bad the tie-in game came a year and a half after its iOS counterpart, and about that long since anyone cared.
--
The inmates have escaped and Batman has his hands full defeating an army of henchmen and some of his most iconic villains. Scour the rooftops and the seedy underbelly of Gotham City through a series of one-on-one battles with The Joker, Two-Face and more, as well as the Batman: Arkham City Lockdown exclusive - Deathstroke. Choose from several Batman skins and power-ups as you punch, kick and combo your way to cleaning up Gotham City.

Pulse Infiltrator

Psychically-enhanced super soldiers seem to be a dime a dozen in the future - what clandestine world power wouldn't want operatives that can kill you with their brain? The Portal inspiration in Pulse Infiltrator is pretty clear, but the hook is your gravity-manipulating telekinetic power. Graphics are sharp, if simple, and if you can handle touchscreen FPS controls, there appears to be some pretty good puzzle and shooting action.
--
Pulse Infiltrator is a first person tactical espionage action game for Android that emphasis on problem solving and shooting action. Solve problems by use your telekinesis powers to throw objects around and snap them to place. You can also manipulate gravity around you to lift objects to create different path ways. Use your weapon to blast through enemy security or avoid them completely. It is up to you to help the Pulse underground resistance group and sabotage the Citadel Corporation.

Icy Tower 2 Temple Jump

The Icy Tower series has gained a startling amount of players. The latest release isn't really a sequel so much as an expansion pack - it's got plenty of towers, but seems to be pretty low on ice. This one is set in a generic tribal temple, wherein running is swapped for jumping and graphics are decidedly 2D. Jump across various floors and floating platforms, collect coins, earn power-ups - you know the drill.
--
Jump up the Temple without falling down. Easy to learn and amazingly entertaining, this arcade hit game will stick like glue in your hands for hours and hours. Can you reach the top?
  • Endless and challenging jumping fun.
  • Easy and smooth controls, tilt or touch.
  • Exciting treasure floors to jump on.
  • Catch coins to spend in the shop.
  • Amazing Power-ups to spice things up.
  • Upgrade the tower to get advantages.

CRUSH

Crush has the combination of simple concepts and punishing difficulty that masochistic puzzle fans love. It's pretty similar to the classic board game Go, albeit in a single player form, but the sliding, tilting graphics are strangely hypnotic - it's downright impressive to see in what's technically a simple 2D game. Three modes should keep you on your toes during the short play sessions.
--
WARNING: This game is hard. The creator of Slydris, 2012 iOS Game of the Year*, is back with another elegant and intense puzzle game designed specifically for touch screens. CRUSH sounds simple: Keep the blocks from filling the screen by removing matching colors with a single touch. But the blocks keep coming, and each touch boosts the stack even higher.
