Good news for owners of HTC's Sensation line of smartphones -- you'll be getting an upgrade to Google's Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system in March. Everybody else with an HTC phone, disappointingly, you'll have to wait until later this year to get in on the latest Android sweetness.
Bummer.
The announcement, which HTC made on its Facebook page on Thursday, is a delay of the time frame the Taiwanese smartphone and tablet maker set for its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades back in November, when it said all the updates would take place in "early 2012."
"HTC has been working hard to get its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades ready, and we're excited to announce that our first round of ICS upgrades will roll out by the end of March for the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XE, followed soon thereafter by the HTC Sensation XL," the company said in its Facebook statement.
"In addition, we can confirm Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will be coming later this year to the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD."
When HTC's devices do get the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, the software will be altered with the company's "Sense" user interface. HTC offered no word on Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades for its tablets such as the Evo View and Flyer.
Ice Cream Sandwich, in an unadulterated version, made its debut on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus in December and since then, no hardware makers have been in much of a rush to get their versions of the operating system on smartphones or tablets.
Samsung has said its "Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note phones will be updated in the first quarter 2012 "and other Galaxy devices will soon follow thereafter. LG is promising its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades in the "second and third quarters of 2012." And Sony has said 11 of its smartphones and its two tablets will get Ice Cream Sandwich in 2012, but it hasn't yet said when. Motorola has promised upgrades for its smatphones but also hasn't said when exactly Ice Cream Sandwich will arrive.
