Best Android apps: Five free apps for astronomy


There's thousands of apps available that let you do everything from save money to watch TV on your smartphone. Your Google Android device can even be a helpful tool when it comes to astronomy. Here's five free Android apps that will help you when it comes to learning about the planets and the stars.

Space Images

With this free app you can view images and videos of space, stars and the planets, including Earth and the sun. The pictures are provided by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and you can even share them directly with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Solar Planets 3D

Want to take a closer look at Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune? Then this is the app for you. It offers 3D models of the planets and even lets you rotate them using your touchscreen

Google Sky Map

According to Google, this free app "turns your Android-powered device into a window on the night sky. Not only does it allow you to point your phone at the sky, to and identify which stars, planets, constellations are in view, it also show which direction to move you handset in, in a bid to locate your favourite celestial objects.

We love this app because it puts hundreds of Astronomy and Space Flight facts at your fingertips.

Moon Maps

Get up close and personal with the Moon using Moon Maps. This app lets you browse the surface of the moon. You can choose between 2 map layers (Clementine mosaic and Lunar Orbiter mosaic) and even search a database of lunar features.
