The sequel packs in more enemies, more weapons, and another exquisitely crafted world, while refining the cautious but brutal combat. The sequel also introduced the ClashMob system, allowing players to take part in global competitions for ultimate prestige. We’d hate to choose between the two games, but even at the relatively high price, you’ll get more than enough value from either. We suggest buying both.

Leading 2012′s charge towards bringing console-quality gaming to mobile devices is Zynga’s Horn, a fantastic RPG slasher that calls to mind the classic Zelda games and just a tiny bit of Shadow of the Colossus. Teaming up with a cantankerous assistant, you battle with swords, bows, and your magical horn to solve the many puzzles of the game, and finish the fight in one of the best adventures available on mobile.

As well as taking charge of a ferocious fighter on your own, you can also team up with a friend for co-op action in Glu Mobile’s recently released sequel. A bloody and brutally violent affair, you’ll trawl through grim dungeons in search of shinier armor and weapons. It’s also one of the prettiest games available to Android gamers, and certainly deserves a home on your tablet.

This freemium game from Gameloft may not be to everyone’s taste, as there’s a heavy dependence on in-app purchases, but fans of the genre owe it to themselves to get a feel for the Dungeon Hunter series. The third entry represents the best of the lot, with over a thousand shiny items to find, four different classes, and some of the most impressive graphics we’ve seen on iOS and Android.

A great example of easy to learn, hard to master, Heroes Call has recently been updated to support the new iPad’s amazing Retina capabilities. Pick a hero that suits your combative preferences, and then embark on 40 levels of dungeon-crawling, blood-spattering mayhem. There are more than 100 different enemy types to be slaughtered, and each hero takes a unique journey through the game’s story.

Here’s the situation. The world has been decimated by warfare and what little is left of the population live on a day to day basis. The only way to increase your rank and social standing is to enter in death races. This is the very concept of Cracking Sands which combines racing and combat elements.

Cracking Sands can now be downloaded over at Google Play  for free. You will need an Android device running on at least Android 2.2 as well as a storage space of 350 MB. You will actually be getting the full version despite the title being free. The only downside to this is that you will be served with ads and you will have a limited access to character parts and upgrades. If you want these restrictions gone you will have to spend real world money through in-app purchase.

You can customize your character as well as your vehicle any which way you and can even unlock more powerful items once you have passed certain levels of the gamers. The numbers of weapons that the game presents to you are wide and varied that it will put the entire US arsenal to shame.

In terms of graphics the game is beautifully done with emphasis made on detail. It also plays smoothly without any lag at all on compatible devices.

As far as controls goes it looks pretty lacking. The only option available in controlling your vehicle is tilt-to-steer and even that is not accurate. This makes it difficult to steer your vehicle. The placement of the on screen buttons also make it difficult to use.

Despite these shortcomings the game has its moments and is entertaining to play. There’s a single player mode as well as a multiplayer mode where you can go head to head among the best racers around the world.

FROST Attack Allows Hackers to Access Android Data after Freezing Your Phone

Researchers have discovered that it’s possible to retrieve data stuck in an Android phone’s RAM after it has been frozen. Seems bizarre, but it’s apparently a very legitimate security problem. The scientists, who studied the technique at Erlangen University, call the process Forensic Recovery of Scrambled Telephones, or FROST for short.

Here’s how it works, as described by Forbes: the researchers found that if they cool down a phone’s RAM long enough, then there’s a small window of time, just a few seconds, in which they can connect the phone to a computer and pull out the data that was stored in memory. It doesn’t provide everything stored on the phone, but can sometimes reveal the password that’s used to unlock a device.

“RAM doesn’t lose its content immediately,” one researcher explained. ”If it’s 30 degrees celsisus, it’s lost in one or two seconds. But if you cool the phone, the contents are lost in five or six seconds. That gives us enough time to reboot the phone and access the memory.”

The scientists don’t think the issue will work with iOS users, and noted that full access to a phone would require that the bootloader is unlocked. This is most prevalent among users who prefer to install custom ROMs on smartphones. Still, hackers could gain access to Wi-Fi passwords, emails, photos and more. Sporting a very PlayStation-style layout, this controller can do between 10 and 20 hours of gaming from a single charge, connects wirelessly via Bluetooth and will play nicely with Android, Mac, Windows and iOS. The SteelSeries Engine software allows you to program all 12 buttons to suit almost any game, too.

Whereas the Steelseries controller offers a standalone solution, Gametel’s controller features an adjustable grip to accommodate your smartphone to make an all-in-one portable gaming machine. As with the others it connects to your Android smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth for simple set up and has a rechargeable battery that will see you through 9 hours of gaming from a single charge.

MOGA  - $49.99 (~£45 with shipping to UK)

This gamepad works with a similar principle to the Gametel pad, featuring an adjustable clip to take any smartphone up to 3.2-inches wide in landscape orientation to make a Project SHIELD-style portable console. Rubberised dual analog sticks and a whopping 18 hours gameplay make this a great option; although on the downside it runs on AAA batteries rather than having a rechargeable battery tucked away inside. Compatible games include the gore-fest Dead Trigger, street racer Asphalt Heat 7 and the classic Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, to name but a few.

MOGA’s Pivot app will also bring you a feed of the latest compatible games, which is useful as not every app from the Play Store has compatibility with gamepad accessories.

Nyko PlayPad Pro  – £30

Closely resembling the layout of the Xbox 360 controller, the Nyko PlayPad Pro is aimed at the more serious mobile gamer. Nvidia lent a hand in the development, so we know its top notch and has compatibility with Tegra-compatible games, which tend to be some of the best games out there. Connectivity comes in the form of Bluetooth, while Nyko’s Playground app helps the controller to work even with older titles that weren’t design with gamepads in mind.

You’ll need an Android 3.0 or higher on your device in order to use this gamepad.

Snakebyte iDroid:con  – £30

Looking very much like one of those dodgy third party PS2 controllers that’d frequent the likes of Pink Planet, the iDroid:con sports a PlayStation-button layout for familiarity, including two rubberised analog sticks, shoulder buttons and a D-pad. You can also switch between gamepad, mouse and keyboard modes to give better compatibility with all types of games.

Snakebyte prides itself in not needing to offer an app with this controller, as the others do, with a simple Bluetooth connection being all that’s needed to get this baby up and running. It’s got a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, compatibility with games such as Shadowgun and Riptide GP, and a turbo button. That last one sold it for us, too.

It’s worth noting that you won’t get perfect compatibility with every game on the Play Store with any of these controllers – some will work smoothly, some will have niggly issues and some might not even work at all. The good thing is that the best titles tend to be the ones designed to work nicely with these gamepads.
